About Us
The Summit Garden Club was founded in 1916 by six ladies who loved gardening. In 1920, the club became a member of The Garden Club of America. Members have always been involved in community projects focusing on education and service. Since its inception, we have worked closely with the Reeves-Reed Arboretum, a 13.5-acre estate purchased in 1974 by citizens and the city of Summit. Members have served on its board and contributed countless volunteer hours tending the Herb Garden and working on Arboretum projects. Funding we provided has supported horticulturalists, the pond restoration, a hoop house, urban children’s groups, and summer interns. We helped establish the wildlife habitat. We designed and planted, and continue to maintain, the Herb Garden. We spearheaded the restoration of the Ellen Shipman Garden. Many GCA Freeman Medal plant and tree winners grow at the RRA. Our members are involved with the City of Summit's conservation efforts, city planning and land use, and each year prune the roses in the Village Green and weed invasive plants at the Head of the Passaic River Trail. At the Summit Farmer's Market, we handed out 1500 cloth bags to discourage the use of plastics in 2019. We enjoy the camaraderie of our members and educating ourselves and the community while continuing our 108-year legacy.
